This city of 39,147 inhabitants was founded on May 21, 1819 (although its origins go back to 1725). The design, colours and symbolism come from the CoA: the yellow symbolizes the Taíno [Tai'no] Indians who lived [live??] in Isabela and are known for the characteristic use of gold in decorations. The green symbolizes the most ancient known inhabitants of Isabela, archaic Indians and ingerís [mixed?], the latter probably being the first agriculturers in the island, hence the green colour.
