This city of 39,887 inhabitants was founded in 1779. The explanation of the flag is a bit long, so here is a short digest. It refers to the royal Navarran lineage of the Ramírez [Rami'rez] de Arellano family, the French colours of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity (transmitted through Santo Domingo and an eminent son of the city, don Ramón [Ramo'n] Emeterio Betances), those same colours which were hoisted elsewhere in Puerto-Rico as a symbol of liberty for former slaves, in Mayagüez [Mayagu"ez] and Lares. The point (red triangle) symbolizes the Cape ["Cabo"] and the colour of the vio Colón [Colo'n], the shape retaining its heraldical symbolism of rectitude. The blue and white refer to the surrounding sea, the old ports and inlets, exploits from maritime wars, pirates, fishing, merchant ships.
