These are older rank flags, I have noted that the rank flags were approved at the same time [1870] as the Naval Ensign and
other naval flags. I have no source to support this note, so perhaps someone could confirm or deny this date. Of course, all were abandoned on 14 August 1945 at the end of World War II.

This is based on a pencil sketch made several years ago. My notebooks shows a reference to the National Geographic, 1917, page 350, Item no. 631.
I have no information with respect to the dates of usage, adoption, abandonment, etc., so any added information is appreciated.
