Leaders from the countries around the Black Sea held a two-day summit in Yalta. The summit meeting formally established the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) as a regional economic organization. The BSEC was founded in 1992 and includes eleven member countries:
Albania,
Armenia,
Azerbaijan,
Bulgaria,
Georgia,
Greece,
Moldova,
Romania,
Russia,
Turkey and the
Ukraine. The group's permanent secretariat is located in Istanbul.
Of interest to vexillologists is the possibility of a flag for the new international organization. A hint about what this
flag looks like was given in a report by Itar-Tass news agency. A day before the summit Itar-Tass reported: "A rehearsal of the final part of the summit was held on Thursday at the square in front of the Yalta hotel. Sailors in spotless white uniforms hoisted under the accompaniment of a trumpet a blue flag with a white circle in its upper part, which is the flag of BSEC. The official ceremony of hoisting the flag will be held on Friday after the signing of the BSEC Charter and the adoption of a declaration of the summit."
