This book goes through the states, giving each one 1 illustration (unlike [smi75a], which illustrates the flags at various points in the state's history) and about 2 pages of text. Unlike [bra92], it still attempts to give a serious history of the flag.

This is a book about all the provincial and municipal coats of arms and flags (incl. legal descriptions etc.!) The intention was to publish such a book for each province, but since there is just a small market for this kind of books, the first one was also the last. The book has been remaindered, and is still available for a reduced price.

An excellent flag reference with many good illustrations. It can be hard to find but it is by no means "rare". (In fact, its one of the most common 19-th century flag books.) However the Quarto edition is rather scarce. This book is most commonly found in a smaller format, about 8 inches tall, and all of the plates are bound together at the end. The Quarto edition has the plates distributed throughout the book.
Nick Artimovich, 23 Jul 1998

25 plates. Covers adequate, not exciting. Text content grubby in places.
