This book deals extensively with legislation about the flag and the national shield (and the shields of the states), and refers to flags used by Mexico from the era of the Aztecs.

The least serious of the books that I have in my collection that purport to cover the U.S. state flags. It's down to one illustration and one sparse page of text that explains the symbolism and some of the state's history but rarely anything about the flag's history. One example: It illustrates the new Nevada flag (with "NEVADA" below the star rather than circling it) and cheerfully states that the flag was adopted in 1929 with no clarifying remarks.

Short introduction.

Part One. British Empire 30 pages.
Covers British flags in general, then deals with the national flags of the dominions and protectorates, and badges of the colonies, one by one.

Part Two; Foreign Countries 80 pages.
Short entry for each country arranged alphabetically. Every entry has a black and white drawing of the flag with colours indicated by a letter code. Surprisingly good system; much better than hatching/shading. Also a list of "Days when the National Flag is Flown" for nearly every entry. Just two fairly ordinary colour plates of National Flags and two colour plates of aircraft insignia. Ends with all the national flag flying days listed by the calendar, and with flags and aircraft insignia classified by appearance.

I’ve not especially checked it for accuracy, but it seems quite good. Lists a large number of authorities consulted, including the Chief Librarian of the East Riding County Library at Beverley and the staff of the Hull Reference Library.
