LIGURIAN (LIGURE) [LIJ] 5,100 in Monaco, 17% of the population (1988); 1,853,578 in Italy (1976). Also northern Italy and Corsica, France. Indo-European, Italic, Romance, Italo-Western, Western, Gallo-Romance, Ligurian. Dialects: GENOESE (GENOAN, GENOVESE), MONÉGASQUE (MUNEGASC, VENTIMIGLIESE). Ligurian is closer to Piemontese, Lombard, and French than to Standard Italian. Monégasque was nearly extinct in the 1970's, but compulsory learning in schools has revived it. Bible portions 1860.
