Used mainly by intellectuals, professionals, authorities. Taught in school as a third language. National language. Bible 1530-1986. NT 1474-1980. Bible portions 1483-1987.

GERMAN, STANDARD [GER] 9,200 or more (1993 Johnstone); 98,000,000 in all countries (1995 WA). Indo-European, Germanic, West, Continental, High. Used as a second language by industrial workers and rural people. Taught in school as a second language. National language. Bible 1466-1982. NT 1522-1983. Bible portions 1522-1987.

LUXEMBOURGEOIS (LUXEMBURGIAN, LUXEMBOURGISH, LETZBURGISCH, LËTZEBURGESCH, MOSELLE FRANCONIAN) [LUX] 300,000 in Luxembourg (1976 Stephens); 20,618 in USA (1970 census); 14,900 in Belgium; 335,518 or more in all countries. Also spoken by a few in Bitburg area Germany, and in Thionville, France. Indo-European, Germanic, West, Continental, High. As distinct from Standard German as is Dutch (Stephens 1976), and not inherently intelligible with it. A Moselle variety of Frankish-German origin, related to varieties of Mitteldeutsch of Belgium. The mother tongue of most of the population. Taught in school. For most people it is the language of creativity. Literature flourishes at a modest level. Pride in ethnic identity and language. Speakers learn French and German mainly in school. Luxembourgeois is said to be a dialect of Francic. National language. Braille code available. Work in progress.
