Santos in Oaxaca's Ancient Churches

A study of santos in 16th-century and other churches in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Claire and Richard Stracke.  Funded by a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation.

El Señor de la Misericordia I

Crucifix (Red loincloth, no scutum, no crown).

Wood, gesso, paint; painted eyes; fabric loincloth; 9' total height.

Blood flows from the temples, the knees, and the wounds. The right ring finger and left pinkie are missing. What appears to be a fabric is showing at the right baby toe. The crosspieces are elaborately sculpted dowels in a dark wood.

Location: East wall of the convento museum.
