Santos in Oaxaca's Ancient Churches

A study of santos in 16th-century and other churches in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Claire and Richard Stracke.  Funded by a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation.

Priest

Priest with cross and lily.

Wood, gesso, paint; glass eyes, lashes; 2'.

The lily and cross appear to be recent additions. The figure has lifelike skin tones with five o'clock shadow, wears a black cassock and white surplice, and holds the cross out in its right hand toward the viewer. Considering the small size, the hands are remarkably well detailed, with sinews and fingernails.

Location: Glass case on the first altar along the north wall of the nave, directly below the Guadalupe.
