VATICAN CITY, SEP 2, 1996 (VIS) - Following is a list of activities engaged in by John Paul II during the month of August, including the angelus, general and private audiences, letters, nominations and other pontifical acts, and deaths. All are presented in chronological order under their heading.
- August 4: Continued reflections on the richness of Eastern Christianity,
focusing particularly on a great element of unity between Eastern and Western
Christians: their common veneration of the Fathers of the Church.
- 11: Went on with reflections on the Christian East, concentrating
particularly on the development of oriental theology.
- 15: On the Solemnity of the Assumption, joined believers throughout the world
in paying homage to the Mother of the Lord. Entrusted to the Blessed Virgin the
next (12th) World Youth Day, to be held in Paris, France, in August of 1997.
- 18: Spoke on the veneration of the saints that unites the Churches of the
East and the West, especially love of the Blessed Virgin.
- 25: Referred to the precious sacrifice of the martyrs of the East and West.
After recalling the story of Sts. Boris and Gleb, at the dawn of Slavic
Christianity in the kingdom of Kiev, the Pope underlined the experience of
martyrdom of Orthodox and Catholics in the countries of Eastern Europe during
the 20th century, "sap of unity for the Church."
- August 7: At 10:30 a.m. in the Vatican Basilica, met with 4,000 Poles, and
then in the Paul VI Hall with faithful from Italy and throughout the world, to
whom he spoke about Mary, model of virginity.
- 14: At 11:30 a.m., from a balcony at the Apostolic Palace in Castelgandolfo,
continued his Marian catechesis, underlining that Mary is the full realization
of Messianic hopes.
- 21: At 10:30 a.m. in the Paul VI Hall, spoke of the grace that Joseph and
Mary received to live together the charism of virginity and the gift of
matrimony.
- 28: At 10:30 a.m. in the Paul VI Hall, continued his Marian catechesis and
emphasized Mary's perpetual virginity.
- August 1: Message to the superior general of the Congregation of Our Lady of
Charity of the Good Shepherd, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the
birth of the foundress.
- 2: Telegram of condolence addressed to Archbishop Henri Teissier of Algiers,
Algeria, for the tragic death of Bishop Pierre Lucien Claverie of Oran.
- 3: First Saturday of the month, recitation of the Rosary in the courtyard of
the Pontifical Palace at Castelgandolfo with the faithful gathered there.
- 4: Appeal for peace in Algeria.
- 6: Mass celebrated on the feast of the Transfiguration, 18th anniversary of
the death of Paul VI, in Castelgandolfo.
- 8: Telegram addressed to Archbishop Francis Xavier Kaname Shimamoto of
Nagasaki, Japan, on the occasion of the death of Cardinal Joseph Asajiro
Satowaki, archbishop emeritus of that same diocese.

Huesca, Spain, for the victims of the floods in Aragon.

colloquium organized by the Institute for Human Sciences of Vienna, on the

Pironio, whose resignation was accepted by the Holy Father in conformity with
canon 354 of the C.I.C. The Pope has thanked him for his long service with a
handwritten letter.
- Fr. Daniel Acharuparambil, O.C.D., as metropolitan archbishop of Verapoly,
India.
- Msgr. Edward Joseph Adams of Philadelphia, U.S.A., councillor of the
apostolic nunciature in the Czech Republic, as apostolic nuncio in Bangladesh,
elevating him at the same time to the dignity of archbishop.
- Bishop Georges Edmond Robert Gilson of Le Mans, France, as metropolitan
archbishop of Sens, France, naming him at the same time prelate of the
territorial prelature of Mission de France.
- Bishop Jose Ulises Macias Salcedo of Mexicali as metropolitan archbishop of
Hermosillo, Mexico. He succeeds Archbishop Carlos Quintero Arce, whose
resignation was accepted by the Pope on having reached the age limit.
- Bishop Ricardo Guizar Diaz of Atlacomulco as metropolitan archbishop of
Tlalnepantla, Mexico.
- Bishop Georges Pontier of Digne as bishop of La Rochelle, France.

- Elevated the territorial prelature of Santo Domingo de los Colorados,
Ecuador, to the level of diocese, with the same name and geographical
configuration, making it a suffragan of the metropolitan Church of Portoviejo.
He nominated Bishop Emilio Lorenzo Stehle, until now prelate of Santo Domingo
de los Colorados, as bishop of the new diocese.
- As honorary consultor of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State,
Francisco Javier Trusso of the archdiocese of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
- Accepted the resignation presented by Bishop Julio Parise Loro, C.S.I., of
the apostolic vicariate of Napo, Ecuador, on having reached the age limit. He
is succeeded by Bishop Paolo Mietto, C.S.I., coadjutor of the same apostolic
vicariate.

Claverie, O.P., of Oran, at the Cathedral of Oran, Algeria.
- 15: The Holy See Press Office informs that in the course of the periodic
tests which the Holy Father undergoes, yesterday afternoon he went to the
nearby "Regina Apostolorum" hospital in Albano to have a CAT scan, which showed
no signs worth mentioning, particularly in relation to his abdominal surgery
of 1992.
- 19: Message of Cardinal Secretary of State Angelo Sodano for the 17th edition
of the "Meeting for friendship among peoples."
Communique on the visit, by invitation from the Episcopal Conference of the
Czech Republic, of Cardinal Bernardin Gantin, dean of the College of Cardinals
and prefect of the Congregation for Bishops, to the dioceses of that country.
- 26: Homily by Cardinal Angelo Sodano, secretary of state, at the episcopal
ordination of Msgr. Aldo Cavalli, archbishop and pontifical representative in

- 28: Cardinal Achille Silvestrini, prefect of the Congregation for the
Oriental Churches, visited the Catholic Oriental communities in Belarus and
Poland from August 14 to 20 for the 4th centenary of the Union of Brest.
Communique of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and
Itinerant Peoples, for the arrival in Rome and audience with the Holy Father
of the four pilgrims who have followed the "Via Francigena" (the 1,600
kilometer path that Archbishop Sigericus of Canterbury followed in 990 to go
to Rome to receive the pallium).

- 30: Declaration of Msgr. Mario Zenari before the permanent council of the
Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE). The Holy See
insists that the general elections in Bosnia-Herzegovina on September 14 must
be totally free. It calls the various states to guarantee the participation of
all citizens and all political forces in that consultation, which will bring
the war period to an end and open the institutional path to the rebuilding of
the peace and security of all the communities.
Holy See Press Office communique informing that on Tuesday, September 3, at
11:30 a.m., Cardinal Jan P. Schotte, C.I.C.M., secretary general of the Synod
of Bishops, will present to accredited journalists the "Lineamenta" of the
special assemblies of the Synod of Bishops dedicated to America and Asia.
- 31: Article by Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, president of the Pontifical
Council for the Family, published today in L'Osservatore Romano and dedicated
to "The fight against the sexual abuse of children: a challenge to wisdom and
to the humanity of peoples." This publication corresponds to the international
UNICEF conference that concludes this same day in Stockholm, Sweden.
