FMLN denies using Cruz Leon to destabilize El Salvador

San Salvador, Sep 18 (EFE).- The former Salvadoran guerrillas denied Thursday using a former Salvadoran cadet, who was arrested in Cuba for alleged terrorist activity, to destabilize El Salvador's government.

In a press conference Thursday, a legislator from the ruling rightist National Republican Alliance (ARENA), Roberto Larios, denounced several members of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN), including legislator Schafick Handal, for traveling to Cuba and using "this isolated case" to promote instability within the Salvadoran government.

Larios said the FMLN, which became a political party after the civil war ended, has tried to link former Salvadoran cadet Raul Ernesto Cruz Leon with the Salvadoran army and government to create instability.

Cruz Leon was arrested September 4 in Havana and accused by Cuban authorities of bombing several Cuban hotels.

A few days later, Cruz Leon made a televised confession on Cuban television.

FMLN legislator Ileana Rogel told EFE Thursday that Handal is in Cuba, but stated that the trip was made strictly for health reasons.

Rogel said that the nine parties in the Legislative Assembly are considering creating a commission to travel to Cuba "to get first-hand information" on the Cruz Leon case. EFE
