U.N.: End embargo of Cuba
UNITED NATIONS -- (AFP) -- With an overwhelming majority pitting the
United States and Israel against most of the world, the U.N. General
Assembly on Wednesday demanded an end to the U.S. economic embargo against
Cuba.
The General Assembly adopted a nonbinding resolution calling for an end
to the 36-year economic blockade with 157 votes in favor, 12 abstentions
and only the United States and Israel against.
The resolution, which underscored the mounting isolation of the United
States on the Cuban embargo issue, has been voted annually since 1992,
each time with a higher number of states in favor.
