Events since Pope John Paul II visited Cuba Jan. 21-25:

  • Jan. 27: Guatemala restores diplomatic relations, broken in 1961.

  • Feb. 6: Cesar Gaviria, secretary general of Organization of American States, reiterates support for returning Cuba to OAS.

  • Feb. 16: Panamanian President Ernesto Perez Balladares visits Cuba.

  • March 6: Canadian Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy says Cuba should return to OAS.

  • March 6: European Union says it will consider adding Cuba to agreement that gives former European colonies preferential trade access to European markets.

  • March 12: Prime Minister James Mitchell of St. Vincent and the Grenadines visits Cuba.

  • March 27: Cuba applies for membership in ALADI, a Latin American economic integration agency.

  • April 13: Cape Verde President Manuel Mascarenha Gomez visits Cuba.

  • April 21: Dominican Republic restores diplomatic relations broken since the 1960s.
