Hector PERAZA LINARES, journalist for Habana Press

Amnesty International has learned that Hector Peraza Linares, a journalist working for the independent press agency Habana Press, was released from detention on 23 September 1997. He had been detained at the State Security headquarters in Pinar del Rio since 23 June 1997.

Hector Peraza Linares is not reportedly facing trial but it is not clear whether his release is conditional with him refraining from journalistic activities. Over the past year, several other journalists have been effectively forced into exile after being subject to frequent harassment, periods of detention and threats of imprisonment as a result of their journalistic activities.

Amnesty International considered Hector Peraza Linares to be a prisoner of conscience, imprisoned solely for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression.

No further action is necessary at present. Thank you to all those who sent appeals.
