It is the most important Tuscian collection (8th to 18th centuries) with numerous illuminated panels of the twelfth to sixteenth centuries schools of Upper Latium Umbria and Siena. There are also some oil-paintings, works in silver and mosaic of 8th century, one of the few remains of the decoration of the old Basilica of Saint Peter in Rome. The museum which was the church of S. Silvestro is the oldest building in Orte's town centre. The style is romanesque, with a single nave. It was built in the middle of the 11th century, as was fine brick bell-tower, in the style of Latium, wich is adjacent. The original bell is preserved in the museum.
