The earth and its seas are symbolized by a small wood and a body of water with two ships.
Psalm CXLVIII, a hymn of universal praise of the Divine Power, begins just below the illumination: "Praise ye the Lord from the heavens: praise ye him in the high places. Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts. Praise ye him, O sun and moon..."
The sun and moon are placed in the upper part on either side of the Lord. This miniature was painted by the Limbourg brothers.
