David has a vision of the apostles going forth into
the world after the Ascension to preach the gospel.
Two of them - both haloed, one tonsured, the other
with a mane of hair and a beard - proclaim the
"good news" to the people of the world who are
represented by Africans on the left and Caucasians
on the right. Neither group seems overly interested
in the teaching.
The Duc de Berry's bear gambols in the foliage of
the marginal decoration, which is contemporaneous
with the Limbourgs' miniature.
Under the picture
begins Psalm VIII, the fifth verse of which was
interpreted as a proclamation of the future preaching
of the apostles: "Their sound hath gone forth into all
the earth: and their words unto the ends of the
world."
