|One of Support Democracy in China's ongoing programs is the Kim Fung Memorial Award Program. Kim (Guang-Ching) Fung was active in humanitarian aid to dissidents in the Chinese pro-democracy movement in the San Francisco Bay Area. He passed away of cancer in January this year. To commemorate his career and unfinished goal, his friends and family have established a long-term award program to further his desire to support politically active dissidents in China, in the form of an annual financial contribution to selected individuals with significant contributions to the democratic process in China.
The program, Kim Fung Memorial Award Program, has already received enough pledges to award five recipients this June, and is seeking outside tax-deductible donations to expand the number of recipients.
Each year, on the anniversary of June fourth, where thousands of peaceful Chinese students and citizens sacrificed their lives at Tiananmen Square for their ideas, the Memorial Award Program will select several recipients based on:
Although most candidates will be residents of China, under special circumstances candidates who are living outside China can be considered. Candidates will come from recommendations by individuals or human rights and pro-democracy organizations.
The awarded recipients may or may not be publicized, depending on their personal safety and other circumstances. The award is set, initially, at $500 per recipient. If the funding is sufficient, the Program will also consider another group of annual awards at the end of the year.
If would like to support our award program, please send a tax-deductible donation checks to the Kim Fung Memorial Award Program; we welcome annual pledges (e.g., $25, $50, $100 or more a year).
