| One of Deng Xiaoping's legacies in
Chinese history will be that of a major economic leader
and reformer. Unfortunately, his modernization of the
Chinese economy did not bring with it political change.
It is ironic that Mr. Deng, the author of the famous
quotation "It doesn't matter if its a black cat or a
white cat, as long as it catches mice", used to
support economic reform in China, was not able to use the
same logic to foster political reform as well. Under Mr
Deng's leadership, there was a total absence of political
freedom and many millions of Chinese have suffered gross
violations of their human rights. The demonstrations by
students in Tiananmen Square in 1989 grew out of a desire
for more than just economic openness in the society, but
political openness as well. The massacre that followed,
that was ordered by Mr Deng, will always be remembered as
the action of a tyrant. SUPPORT DEMOCRACY IN CHINA hopes that with Mr Deng's passing, there will come a new generation of leaders with the courage to bring to the Chinese people not only economic prosperity, but long needed political reforms. Support Democracy in China (SDC) is a non-profit, non-political organization devoted to peaceful, humanitarian means of supporting the people of China in their pursuit of a more democratic government. |
