Santa Maria del Camino Parish

Spanish Version

OUR LADY SAINT MARY OF THE WAY
PATRONESS OF THE PARISH

"And Mary started on her way..." (Lucas 1:39)

Saint Mary of the Way, mother who guides us
on the way to Jesus Christ, protector of the Followers
of the Way, of pilgrims, travellers and drivers.

Santa Maria del Camino parish is located on the southwestern edge of the city of San Salvador, El Salvador. Approximately half of the parish consists of lower-middle class urban neighborhoods, while the other half consists of poorer suburban and rural households.

Currently, the parish community celebrates the Eucharist in a small church, that was practically rebuilt from abandoned ruins. It is dignified but modest, and some not so loyal Catholics in the parish prefer to attend Mass at one of the prettier parish churches farther north.

There is much to be done pastorally, since there are many incredulous residents in the area. In addition, local youth is constantly in danger of falling prey to drugs and violent gangs.

Father Tobias Alberto and the Parish Council have organized four teams to cope with different needs. The Pastoral Ministry arranges visits to homes to preach the Gospel, cathechism for the young, Houses of Prayer scattered throughout the parish, and various courses for the formation of the faithful. The Liturgical Ministry organizes the daily celebration of the Mass, as well as courses to teach the meaning and proper celebration of liturgical acts. The Social Ministry is most affected by the parish's limited resources, since its mission is to provide assistance to the neediest, in an already needy community.

The fourth team is the Construction Comittee, charged with planning and developing the parish's physical infrastructure. The parish has obtained a long-term lease on an ideally located ten-thousand square meter plot, and the Comittee is charged with designing and developing a project that will include a new and more adequate church, a house for the parish priests, a day-care center, a health clinic for the needy, and classrooms for the formation of the community, all located in the midst of a garden-like environment.

The estimated total cost of the project is US$900,000.00. Funds are being raised through a variety of means. Drives are organized for specific purposes, such as paying for building permits, fences, etc.
Catholic philantropists, who usually aren't parishioners, have been asked to donate towards the project.
International Catholic assistance organizations, such as the German bishops' Adveniat have also been contacted.

This Internet page you are reading is another fund-raising effort of the parish. Through a generous offer from Christus Rex, we have been able to post it, and to reach you and ask you for help. We have set up two means to receive private international donations: one is by means of checks, the other by wire transfer.

If you wish to help us by sending us a check, in any ammount, it should be made payable to "ARQUIDIOCESIS DE SAN SALVADOR, PARROQUIA SANTA MARIA DEL CAMINO" (spelling is very important), and the words NON-NEGOTIABLE should be written on the check to prevent a fraudulent endorsement. Then, it should be mailed to the following forwarding address:

PARROQUIA SANTA MARIA DEL CAMINO
VIP SAL 903
P.O. BOX 52-5364
MIAMI, FL 33152

This address belongs to Trans-Express, a mail- and freight-forwarder who will deliver mail to us faster and much more reliably than the international postal network.

If you wish to send us your help by means of a wire transfer, please instruct your bank to wire the funds to:

CITIBANK, N.Y. (ABA 021000089)
ACCOUNT 10935547 OF BANCO AGRICOLA COMERCIAL DE EL SALVADOR
INSTRUCTIONS: CREDIT ACCOUNT 542-004976-0
OF ARQUIDIOCESIS DE SAN SALVADOR, PARROQUIA SANTA MARIA DEL CAMINO

Funds received at Banco Agricola Comercial's account with Citibank in New York will immediately be credited to the parish's account in San Salvador.

If you wish to contact the parish via e-mail, our address is ovaldez@es.com.sv

We hope to have moved you to help us, in the same spirit that has always moved Catholics to help their brothers in need. As our construction project moves along, we intend to update this page. Please come back to it periodically, so that you may witness what your valuable help is building.

Thank you, and may our Lord Jesus Christ and Our Lady Saint Mary of the Way bless you abundantly!
