FUTUNA, EAST (FUTUNIAN) [FUD] 3,600 on Futuna (1987), 31.9% of the population; 3,000 in New Caledonia (1986); 8,000 in all countries (1991 UBS). Futuna Island. Different from Futuna Island (West Futuna) in Vanuatu. Austronesian, Malayo-Polynesian, Central-Eastern, Eastern Malayo-Polynesian, Oceanic, Central-Eastern Oceanic, Remote Oceanic, Central Pacific, East Fijian-Polynesian, Polynesian, Nuclear, Samoic-Outlier, Futunic. Not intelligible with Wallisian (East Uvean). Different from Futuna-Aniwa (West Futuna) in Vanuatu. French is used as second language. Agriculturalists: coconut, taro, breadfruit, yam, sweet potato, sugar cane, banana, arrowroot; pig and chicken raisers; fishermen. Christian, traditional religion. Work in progress.

WALLISIAN (UVEAN, EAST UVEAN, WALLISIEN) [WAL] 7,500 in Wallis and Futuna (1987); 500 in Vanuatu (1982 Barrett); 9,000 in New Caledonia (1982); 17,000 in all countries. Uvea Island is their original home. Also in Fiji. Austronesian, Malayo-Polynesian, Central-Eastern, Eastern Malayo-Polynesian, Oceanic, Central-Eastern Oceanic, Remote Oceanic, Central Pacific, East Fijian-Polynesian, Polynesian, Nuclear, Samoic-Outlier, East Uvean-Niuafo'ou. Some dialect divergence between Wallis Islands and New Caledonia. Not functionally intelligibile with Tongan. Bible portions 1971.
