HAITIAN CREOLE FRENCH [HAT] 7,000,000 in Haiti (1995); 159,000 in Dominican Republic; 200,000 in New York City (1977 I. Hancock); 12,317 in Canada (1975 govt. report); 438 in Puerto Rico; 7,382,000 in all countries. Also in Bahamas, British West Indies, French Guiana. Creole, French based. Dialects: FABLAS, PLATEAU HAITIAN CREOLE. Three main dialects. Lower social status than Standard French. In 1961 it was granted legal and educational status in Haiti. Faublas-Pressoir orthography is standard. Radio programs. Mother tongue of entire population; the only language of 95% of the population (Nida 1972). Linguistic influences from Wolof (Benjamin 1956).
