Pope Arrives at Betlhehem
22 March 2000

DUE TO TECHNICAL PROBLEMS ON OUR NETWORKS WE COULD NOT WRITE A DETAILED REPORT ABOUT THE POPE'S ARRIVAL IN THE AUTONOMOUS TERRITORIES AND HIS VISIT TO THE OTHER BAPTISM SITE...

Early this morning the Pope left his residence in Jerusalem (the Apostolic Delegation) by heliocopter. We had a night of rains and this morning the sky is still overcast and there is the possibility of some showers. From Jerusalem the Pope was flown to the Jordan Valley where he had the opportunity to visit the other site (on this site of the Jordan) commemorating the site of the Baptism. After this short visit he was flown to the official helipad prepared for the occcasion just outside Bethlehem. Here the Pope was welcomed at this helipad by Mr. Yasser Arafat, chairman of the Palestinian Authority and his wife. The Pope and Mr. Arafat then heard the Anthemns of the Vatican and the Palestinian. From here they went to the prepared padillion where the Pope was greeted by the political and religious authorities. The Mr. Arafat delivered his welcome speech where he enphasised the aspirations of the Palestinian people and extended a warm welcome to His Holiness. For this speech the Pope replied with his.
