The meaning of the celebration
The celebration of Holy Mass in Amman is a fitting occasion for the Holy FatherÕs meeting with the Christian community in Jordan. The Mass, in honor of Saint John the Baptist, Prophet of God and Precursor of Christ, was chosen not merely because it celebrates the one who went before Christ in his Annunciation and Nativity and pointed to him once he was present in the world, but also because the Baptist is the Patron Saint of Jordan. The Biblical readings highlight the ministry of John the Baptist as Precursor: Jer 1:17-19 (the prophetic call), Acts 19:1-7 (the apostolic memory of JohnÕs baptism of repentance), Lk 3:2b-6, 10-14, 18 (the preaching of the Precursor on the banks of the Jordan river).
Particular ritual aspects
At the beginning of the celebration, water taken
from the Jordan River is blessed for the sprinkling of the faithful.
The Gospel is proclaimed according to the Greek Melkite Rite. The
Baptismal Profession of Faith is introduced by the Patriarch of
Jerusalem. At the end of the Mass the Pope will bless three
cornerstones to be used in the construction of a Maronite Church, a
Syrian Catholic Church and the "Regina Pacis" Center.
Present at this celebration will be two thousand children who will
make their First Holy Communion: they will hold lighted candles
during the Profession of Faith and the Prayer of the Faithful, and at
Holy Communion. Some of them will take part in the Offertory
procession and in the kiss of peace with the Holy Father, and will
receive communion under both species from the Pope.

Il significato della celebrazione
La celebrazione della Messa ad Amman è occasione propizia per
l'incontro del Santo Padre con la comunità cristiana della
Giordania. La Messa in onore di San Giovanni Battista, profeta di Dio
e precursore di Cristo, è stata scelta non solo perché
celebra colui che ha preceduto il Cristo nella sua annunciazione e
nella sua nascita, e lo ha indicato presente nel mondo, ma anche
perché il Battista è patrono della Giordania. Le
letture bibliche sottolineano il ministero di Giovanni Battista il
Precursore: Ger 1, 17-19 (la vocazione profetica), At 19, 1-7 ( la
memoria apostolica del battesimo di penitenza di Giovanni), Lc 3,
2b-6.10-14.18 ( la predicazione del Precursore presso il fiume
Giordano). Alcune particolarità rituali All'inizio della celebrazione viene benedetta
l'acqua, attinta dal fiume Giordano per l'aspersione dei fedeli. Il
Vangelo è proclamato secondo il rito greco-melkita. La
professione di fede battesimale è introdotta dal Patriarca di
Gerusalemme. Alla fine della Messa il Papa procede alla benedizione
di tre prime pietre per la costruzione rispettivamente di una chiesa
maronita, di una chiesa siro-cattolica e del Centro "Regina Pacis".
Sono presenti alla celebrazione 2000 bambini che ricevono la Prima
Comunione: essi tengono le candele accese durante la professione di
fede, la preghiera universale e durante la Santa Comunione; una
rappresentanza di essi partecipa alla processione offertoriale,
all'abbraccio di pace con il Papa e riceve la comunione sotto le due
specie dal Santo Padre.
