On September 25th the titular feast of the Basilica of Emmaus occurs, i.e., the Solemnity of Saints Simon and Cleopas. For pastoral reasons, the feast was transferred to Sunday. As is customary, the Friars Minor went on pilgrimage to Emmaus Qubeibeh, place of the celebrated encounter between the resurrected Christ and the two holy disciples.
At 9:30 the fraternity of Saint Saviour’s departed by bus, then at 10:30 Mass was celebrated by the Most Reverend Pierbattista Pizzaballa, O.F.M., Custos (Guardian) of the Holy Land. Also present were concelebrants.
In order to arrive in Emmaus the friars had to travel along a road that goes around a military barrier (of the Israeli Military Authority) that has been present for some time along the main road.
Also present at the solemn celebration were the small Christian community of Emmaus, some pilgrims, and several Religious Sisters.
During his homily the Custos emphasized the salient points of the Gospel, pointing out how much it has to give to our fraternities. In particular, the Custos wanted to urge all the people present to go forward with positiveness and courage in their walk of faith, placing every hope and joy in Christ.
The student friars of the Franciscan Seminary of Jerusalem assisted in the eucharistic celebration, being directed in Gregorian Chant music by Father Armando Pierucci. Afterwards the Guardian of Emmaus, Father Francesco, invited all present for lunch at the monastery. Afterwards everyone returned to their homes.
