57. Gethsemane - (Gethsemani)

On the slope of the Mount of Olives is shown Gethsemane. A white inscription against a black background indicates the place. To the small church in perspective, seems to be joined a wall, on the left side.


Gethsemane (Matt 26:36), a place where the Saviour prayed before the passion. It is at the foot of the Mount of Olives, and today [the faithful eagerly go to pray there] a church has been built on it. (Eusebius, Onomasticon 74:16-18; Jerome 75:18-19)
