Peraea and Dead Sea

21. Waters of Callirhoe - (Zara)

Along the eastern shore of the Dead Sea are three springs flowing into the sea. The northernmost ist a round pool, the central is a square reservoir with a semi-circular construction (a nymphaeum?) above it. The southernmost source flows from the mountains; its waters form into a round pool bisected by a dam. Two palm trees stand south of it.

(Herod) went over Jordan, and made use of the hot waters of Callirrhoe, which run into the lake As-phaltitis, but are themselves sweet enough to be drunk. (Josephus, War, I,657)
