The Sinai Desert and Egypt

153. Hermupolis - (Damanhur)

Hermupolis (= Hermopolis parva). The city of Hermupolis is identical with modern Damanhur (al- Wahsh). It is often mentioned by classical, Byzantine and Arab authors, also on the Peutinger Plates. It was for some time the capital of the hinterland of Alexandria and a bishop's see since the 4th century. The simple representation shows three towers, one gate entrance, no churches.
