126. The (place) of Saint Hilarion

Herbert Donner (The Mosaic Map of Madaba, Kampen 1992, 76)
This memorial place was situated in or near Der al-Balah, about 10 km southwest of Gaza (H. Donner ZDPV 83, 1967, p. 28f). St. Hilarion of Gaza (291-361?) was born in Thauatha. He was one of the fathers and founders of Palestinian monasticism and died on Cyprus. His life has been described by St. Jerome. His tomb, also mentioned in several Christian sources, was located within a monastery.

Editor's note: Reportedly, excavations have been carried out in 1999 by the Palestinian Authority at Hilarion's monastery in Gaza.
