| NO MEDICINE ALLOWED TO BE DELIVERED TO A DIABETIC FRIAR
|
BETHLEHEM 13.04.2002 - 19.30
To all the difficulties that the siege of the Franciscan fraternity in Bethlehem has brought we have to add a health emergency. Fr. Johannes SIMON, a German Friar, 68 years old, Guardian of the Nativity Friary, has finished his supplies of medicines required for curing his diabetes. These medicines are available in Bethlehem at the clinic of the Sisters of Charity but the Red Cross vehicle is not allowed to go to the Nativity to deliver these medicines. The Custos of the Holy Land, Fr. Battistelli, has tried in all means to obtain permission but no israeli authority has granted him the permission to bring in this much needed medicine.
| SOLIDARITY FROM THE ITALIAN GOVERNMENT
|
JERUSALEM 13.04.2002 - 12.10
The Italian Premier, Silvio Berluscono, expressed his full solidarity to the Custos of the Holy Land, Fr. Giovanni Battistelli and to all the Franciscans of the Holy Land declaring his active involvement in Italy and with the partners of the European Community. This morning the Speaker of the Italian Parliament, Pierferdinando Casini, met the Custos of the Holy Land and visited the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem accompanied by he same Custos. He assured the Franciscans of the involvement of the Italian government and of parliament so that the site of the Nativity in Bethlehem be respected and does not become a battlefield.
