Joint statements
from the Jerusalem Head of Churches
1988-1992
The International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem is a self-proclaimed Christian Zionist institution. In 1985 the International Christian Embassy organised the first Christian Zionist Congress in Basel (in the very same premises as Theodor Herzl in 1897 gathered the first Zionist Congress). In 1988 a Second Christian Zionist Congress was organised in Jerusalem from April 10 till 15. The conferences, according to the M.E.C.C., have "allowed Christian faith and biblical interpretation to become subservient to the policies of the modern state of Israel" (M.E.C.C., 1988, What is Westem Fundamentalist Christian Zionism ?, preface). On April 14, during the second congress, The International Christian Embassy issued a statement in which they declared their love for Israel and the Jewish people. The M.E.C.C. expresses in a contribution to Western Fundamentalist Christian Zionism a worry about the way in which thc International Christian Embassy uses their Christian heritage:
"...every attempt to sacralise a political ideology or state and place them beyond the reach of human criticism or ethical standards should be biblically and theologically questioned"(M.E.C.C., 1988, What is Westem Fundamentalist Christian Zionism ?, preface)
The M.E.C.C. with these words show that their criticism of the International Christian Embassy is not a primarily political one but of biblical and theological nature. Also the Jerusalem Heads of Churches were anxious to express their opinion of the International Christian Embassy and issued on April 15, the day after the proclamation of The International Christian Embassy Jerusalem, a statement concerning the Embassy and its representativity.
