THE HOLY LAND OF THE CRUSADERS

Armenian Codex - Crucifixion.

The Holy Sepulchre - Façade

The liturgical ornaments of the churches
From contemporary sources we know that the sanctuaries reconstructed by the Crusaders were also adorned with rich liturgical funrnishings. At Jerusalem, in the excavations of St. John’s church near the Hospital, there was found a shrine, or a relic of the Holy Cross in a reliquary of rock crystal, which is today kept in the Museum of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchy in Jerusalem. At Bethlehem, during the building of a new hospice for the pilgrims (known as the Casanova Hospice), the Franciscans found various opportunely hidden liturgical objects from the Basilica of the Nativity of the time of the crusade, which today are to be found in the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum Museum in Jerusalem. Belonging to these is an enamelled pastoral with the figure of Christ and a bishop in relief on the two faces of the ringlet, three enamelled chandeliers, and two chandeliers in silver with the inscription in Latin: “Damned is he who removes me from the Holy Grotto of Bethlehem”. Also in the treasure is two bowls in copper decorated with scenes from the life of St. Thomas the Apostle, around 300 organ pipes and 11 bells that must have accompanied the organ music. Also found in Jerusalem was a Crucifix in gilded bronze held in the same Museum.
