Our Lady of Siluva " Siluva, Lithuania "

The recovery of a buried chest containing a picture of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the deed to a church in the town of Siluva, Lithuania, brought devotion to Mary under the title of " Our Lady of Siluva ".

During the Reformation, churches, monasteries, and convents were being confiscated. To insure the future of their church, a wise priest and his faithful parishoners buried the chest; and fortunately so, because in 1569 Calvinists seized the parish church and lands in Siluva.

Forty years later, interest in restoring the church was aroused when children playing in a field saw a lady standing on a rock, and weeping. The parents of the children investigated the claim, and also saw the lady. When asked why she was crying, she replied,

" Formerly my Son was adored and honored in this place. Now, they sow seed and cultivate the land. "

A blind man in the group claimed he knew he knew where the chest was buried. As they approched the designated spot, his sight was suddenly restored. The chest with the picture and deed was found. These incidents led the people to believe that they had witnessed an apparition of Our Lady. The church property was recovered and Mass was again celebrated.
