SOUTH SHIELDS is an attractive Sea-Side Town, with beautiful parks and beaches, and all the fun of the Fair. Part of the coast is maintained by the National Trust, and much is renowned for the coastal bird and plant life, near MARSDEN ROCK, and in front of the LEAS.
In times past, this area, including the herd sands, was the property of The Dean and Chapter of Durham Cathedral
The ROMANS had a major camp here which is well worth a visit. It was from this troublesome out-post of the Roman Empire that VESPASIAN left for PALESTINE where he violently caused the great destruction and DIASPORA of the Jews foretold by Jesus Christ.
One form of earning a living was made from SALT which was obtained from sea water, simply by drying it out in pans, or flat beds.
The Sea has always been in the blood of Shieldsmen down the centuries and in the wars many served, and gave their lives, in the Royal Navy, The Merchant Marine, and supporting services.
Coal played a major role in making England great, but the Town's Collierys have gone. When they were open many miners alternated with a life at Sea.
There are good shopping facilities in town.
Transport connections are excellent by road, and there is the METRO which provides rapid transport to Newcastle Upon Tyne, the nearest large City, about 8 miles to the West.
The International Airport is at Newcastle, and is served by the METRO.
The Town Centre is laid out in, increasingly, as pedestrian traffic-free thoroughfares. Here, you will find, for example, the Library Complex, where in addition to books and periodicals, audio & video tapes may be borrowed - or you may relax in the coffee lounge.
The town has many Societies and Clubs catering for a variety of tastes.
If you like the "Spice of Life" then visit Ocean Road renowned for it's Bangladesh Cuisine!!
